Make your files static (e.g. .html instead of .php, with no executable code) if possible (infinte httpd speedup), and avoid hosting large images locally. Use a CDN (content delivery network) - http://cachefly.com are $15/mo and have a free 30 day trial, too.

If you get ranked, you'll get traffic; if people can't see your content, they will definitely not vote you up. Don't clip the wings of your social media posts - host them properly!

Is a VPS not "proper" hosting, then?

Its a server split into other smaller servers, well thats how i think of it. Which means you are sharing resources with other peoples servers. Memory being an important one.

I have a VPS and know exactly what it is.

Having re-read Delivos' post, I see what he's saying; put large static files such as images on a cheap account with Cachefly. Good advice.

DaveJ - yup. No, I wouldn't personally consider VPS as "proper" hosting - you get an SLA, but you may have performance dents that are out of your control. Though you do get root, and that makes it a million times more useful than shared hosting.

Hey Dave sorry I didn't get my point across too well. I know you will know what VPS is. It was more for other peeps reading this forum that I put it. Dont want them thinking just because they have a slice of the action they can take on the world
