so - i need to start evaluating the businesses that are currently ranking for my niche - what do you guys suggest in doing - i'm doing searches for inlink and inanchors as well as phrases within "". And of course checking out competitors backlinks.

what else can i do to overtake - dominate my niche market ?

Check out their backlinks per page; Create a profile for them in your Webmaster Tools to get a nice summary of data from there; Look at how they acquire links; Look at what press release / forum / rss activity they have (and so on); Find out what their linkbait ideas are, and adapt/copy.

Looking at the broader context of your competitors, there are other ways to dominate them. The business with the most web site visits isn't necessarily the one that makes the most money.

You can also use compete.com tools.. its another cool tool to monitor your competitors
