Default Noobie tips please, titles

I'm working on a group of sites right now, and could do with tips on SEO'ing titles.

So far I:

Include important keywords first
Exclude the sites title as it isnt a recognised brand name
Removed non alphanumeric characters
Try to keep page titles unique
Use | or - to seperate phrases
keep the important stuff within 63 chars

If anyone has any suggestions, in particular what NOT to include, please post here

You can go over that many characters, just don't expect it to be shown in the results pages.

Many people say it's good to get their brand / company name into the title, and they're right to a certain degree, but it's not the most important thing there! Put it at the end of the title. You can also try to cram in category names, depending on the site:

Quote:
Big Red Cardboard Box | Cardboard Boxes | Bob's Boxes
If the site is ever to become a recognised brand, you'd probably want it in there That said, if it's long an unwieldy, it might not be so good, and every case is unique.

Have you got any examples you might be interested in optimising?

Thanks for the reply

I have two domains pointing to the back end right now, they are:

The best car and bike videos on the internet | Boosted Video

and

The best celebrity videos on the internet | Celebrity Arena - may not work as I recently changed DNS.

The titles look fine to me, but here is some basic advice you may want to consider.

I think you should focus on keyword density in the site itself, such as getting those keywords from your title in to the content of your site. Some basic optimization would help a lot such adding an H1 tag - consider something like "bike videos" within it. I would also add a brief description above your featured videos.

FYI - You're also missing keyword & description meta tags.

Good luck with the site!

Post Brand

A quick mention about the importance of brand and identity in <title>:

I've found that how well the title plays out as far as the real click-through is totally dependent on the market.

If a certain brand name is well established for a set of keywords or topics then user's are likely to reach towards them especially if the brand is trustworthy. What this means is that if one is leaving their company name at the end of <title>, it may not be as successful (since it is subject to cut-out given the number of characters and what is likely to come before it)

That's definitely true - you really want to avoid the cutoff (between 60-65 characters at the moment).

If you can't get all the information you'd like into the <title>, a short and easily read meta description will serve as good backup creative.
