If you could pick just one seo technique/strategy/method/tool/voodoo hex to help your search engine ranking for your site, which would it be?

Just one? Concise keywords in title and h1 tags, every time!

Thats a good one I have that near the top of my list to but then I thought what about the anchor text in a link <a ...>Keywords</a>

I know picking just one seems a bit harsh really.

My fall back plan is to just pray to the SEO gods to have mercy on my site.

Incoming links are the most important thing you can get after your code is optimized.
You can have the best h1 and title keywords, content and layout, but if you don't have good inbound links, it won't rank.
